On the Job

REPORTING

Employees who are injured or become ill on the job due to their work-related activities must immediately notify their supervisor of their injury or illness.

The supervisor must then complete and submit an Employer's First Report of Accidental Injury using the Online Accident Reporting System at myrehs.rutgers.edu [Secure Online Form requires NETID].  The first page of the report must be submitted by the end of the employee's work shift.  The remaining pages of the form must be completed as part of the accident investigation and submitted to the Department of Risk Management & Insurance within five (5) working days of the date of the accident.

Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (legacy UMDNJ) employees in Newark, New Brunswick, Stratford/Camden, or other sites in New Jersey must also contact Risk Management in Newark at 973-972-6277 to report the injury or illness. 

TREATMENT

All treatment of work-related injuries must be provide or arranged for through a University-Authorized Physician (except as provided for below).

If treatment for work-related injury or illness is required: 

New Brunswick/Piscataway Campuses - Supervisor or employee must contact the Occupational Health Department in New Brunswick at 848-932-8254 to receive treatment.

Camden or Newark Campuses - Supervisor or employee must contact the Occupational Health Department at 848-932-8254 to arrange treatment.  Camden employees may also contact the Student Health Center in Camden at 856-225-6005 to receive treatment.

For all other Rutgers Off-Campus Sites, Stations, and/or Farms -  Supervisor or employee must contact the Occupational Health Department at 848-932-8254 to arrange treatment.

Biomedical and Health Sciences Campus at Newark  - Supervisor or employee must contact Risk Management in Newark at 973-972-6277 to arrange treatment.

Biomedical and Health Sciences Campus at New Brunswick/Piscataway - Supervisor or employee must contact Risk Management in Newark at 973-972-6277 to arrange treatment.

For all other Biomedical Health Sciences Off Campus Facilities, Clinincs, or University Correctional Health Care  -  Supervisor or employee must contact Risk Management in Newark at 973-972-6277 to arrange treatment.

If Occupational Health or Risk Management in Newark are closed, the employee must go to the nearest hospital emergency room and contact the Occupational Health Department or Risk Management on the next business day for further treatment.

For any serious or life-threatening work-related injuries and illnesses, contact the Occupational Heath Department at 848-932-8254.

Employees with nonwork-related injuries or illnesses must see their personal physician for treatment.

ABSENCE FROM WORK

Full-Time full-benefits employees kept out of work by an Authorized University Physician (AUP) for a work-related illness or injury are entitled to I-time for up to 13 weeks per accident, pending approval by Risk Management.  Once employees use up their I-time, then they will be paid the statutorily required Temporary Total Disability (TTD) Salary Continuation Benefit by the Rutgers Workers Compensation Administrator based on the State Average Weekly Wage.  If the AUP returns the employee back to work on Alternate Duty and the department can accommodate the employee with the restrictions, the employee must return to work or the days missed will be charged to his or her vacation time only.  If the employee has no vacation time available, the employee will be put on a leave of absence without pay.
