New Hard Waiver Student Health Insurance Program - Academic Year 2011-2012 !!!

For the Academic Year 2011-2012 Rutgers University is pleased to offer our Student Health Insurance Plan with UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company which has been designed to meet the needs of our students. The plan has some significant revisions to it therefore please read on!

The University requires all full-time undergraduate and graduate students as defined by the University (12 or more credits for Undergraduate, 9 or more credits for Graduate, or as defined by your department) to have health insurance, both to protect against unexpected high medical costs and provide access to quality care.

Please refer to the frequently asked questions (FAQ's) which should address many of your questions with respect to this new hard waiver insurance program.

Enrollment/Waiver Provisions:

You must enroll or waive the University-Sponsored insurance plan each academic year. It is important for you to make an informed assessment regarding your health insurance coverage each year. Make sure you are not left without appropriate health coverage – it could hinder your academic progress. Please take a moment to review the below links to assist you in making this important decision. www.firststudent.com

You may waive coverage under this plan if your health insurance is approved by the University. You will need to provide information about your coverage in the waiver section.

Health Services and Student Insurance

  • Students are encouraged to utilize the Rutgers University Student Health Centers or UnitedHealthcare's in-network providers which provides for the most cost effective means of receiving quality. To maximize benefits, it is recommended that the Rutgers University Health Centers be utilized when feasible.

The key features of this plan are:

  • Maximum benefit of $50,000 per illness or injury
  • Additional coverage limits of $100,000 and $250,000 may be purchased on an optional basis
  • Benefits for covered services within the United network are payable at 80% with a $150 annual deductible
  • There is a $25 co-pay for office visits
  • For covered services out-of-network there is a $300 deductible and benefits are payable at 60%
  • Prescriptions covered up to a Maximum of $5,000 are included in the plan
  • Please consult the website for details on any limitations or exclusions
  • Coverage may be purchased for a student or their spouse, civil union partner, or dependent children
  • There is an In Network Out of Pocket Maximum of $2,500 per person/ $5000 per family (per policy year)
  • There is an Out of Network Out of Pocket Maximum of $5,000 per person/ $10,000 per family (per policy year)

Full - Time Students

As a Full-Time student, your student health fee provides you with access to the Rutgers University student health centers located on our Rutgers campuses. For details on services provided through your campus ambulatory student health center, please visit the Rutgers University Health Services.


Part - Time Students

  • The plan costs $891.00 for Fall 2011 and coverage is effective from September 1, 2011 to January 16, 2012
  • The plan costs $891.00 for Spring 2012 and coverage is effective from January 17, 2012 to August 31, 2012
  • It is the student's responsibility to make timely renewal payments whether or not a renewal notice is sent

Payment will be made directly to the provider unless bill receipts and proof of payment are submitted. An Explanation of Benefits (EOB) will be mailed to you when a claim is processed.

Dental Plans

  • The Aetna PPO - provides coverage for participating dentists as well as a benefits for non-participating dentists. There is a $50 deductible per policy year and a maximum benefit of $3,000. Annual cost $396 (Student Only)

Personal Property Insurance - Academic Year 2011-2012 NEW

If a student's personal belongings brought on campus are not covered under the homeowner's or tenants policy, Personal Property Insurance should be purchased. A policy designed especially for students, underwritten by Harleysville Insurance Companies through their brokers Haylor, Freyer and Coon Inc. They offer $50 or $100 deductibles for coverages ranging from $2,000 to $20,000.

International Travel Health Select Overseas Insurance 2011-2012 NEW

Health Select Overseas Insurance

Rutgers students enrolled in the Study Abroad program will be automatically covered by the Health Select Overseas Insurance provided by HTH Worldwide Services. Other students who are planning to travel overseas and not enrolled through the Rutgers Study Abroad Office Programs must contact the Department of Risk Management and Insurance to enroll in this coverage

  • Covers any injury or illness up to $100,000
  • There is a $0 deductible for each injury or illness claimed
  • Pre-existing conditions or non-essential services (e.g. dental cleaning, acne treatments, check-ups etc.) are not covered

Rutgers has made this policy available for purchase from HTH Worldwide Services, Inc. for $32 per month per student which will cover you during program dates. To enroll, you must complete the HTH Roster Template Form [MS-Excel] and email it to Steven Martini (Steven.Martini@rutgers.edu) along with a check made payable to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey for $32 x number of months you will be overseas. This check can be mailed to:

The enrollment roster and the payment must be received by our office at least 2 weeks prior to the trip departure.

Upon enrollment students will receive a confirmation email from HTH along with details to print out an ID card and access HTH Worldwide's online resources.
