International Travel Health Insurance and Emergency Assistance

Medical Access Abroad

Since accessing medical and emergency assistance can be difficult and expensive while traveling abroad, Rutgers requires all students traveling internationally to purchase International Medical Insurance.

Students enrolled in the Rutgers Study Abroad program are automatically covered for International Medical Insurance.  Any other students, who are planning to travel overseas and who are not enrolled in Study Abroad, must contact the Department of Risk Management & Insurance to enroll in this required coverage at a cost of $2.10 per travel day overseas per person.

To enroll, you must complete the International Travel Registration Form [XLSM] and email it to Matt Spaventa along with a check made payable to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey for $2.10 x number of days you will be overseas.  Alternatively, University departments can issue a Journal Entry as a form of payment.  The registration form and the payment must be received by Risk Management at least two weeks prior to the trip departure.

  • Covers injury or illness up to $200,000
  • There is a $0 deductible for each injury or illness claimed
  • Cashless transaction if an approved provider is utilized for service
  • Nonessential services (e.g. dental cleaning, acne treatments, check-ups, etc.) are not covered

Enrolled travelers should download and print the On Call International ID Card and Benefits Summary [PDF] that can be used to access On Call International's resources.  You may contact the Department of Risk Management & Insurance with any questions about enrollment or contact On Call International at 1-800-850-4556 for traveler assistance.

Emergency INTERNATIONAL Travel Assistance

Rutgers has also contracted with On Call International to provide emergency security travel assistance services to enrolled students traveleling abroad. Following enrollment, Emergency International Travel Assistance services are provided to student travelers (on official university business).  An ID Card and Benefits Summary [PDF] can be downloaded and printed.  The ID card can be utilized to access the On Call International website and also for accessing their services abroad.  Please keep the ID Card and Benefits Summary [PDF] available at all times while abroad.  It is highly recommended that travelers and trip leaders familiarize themselves with the On Call International services and website prior to departure.
